To celebrate Prince Philip’s upcoming 90th birthday, The Independent compiled a list of 90 of his most memorable and embarrassing sound bites from over the years. For instance, while in China in 1986 he told a British student, “If you stay here much longer, you will go home with slitty eyes.” In 1993 he told survivors of the Lockerbie bombing, “People usually say that after a fire it is the water damage that is the worst. We are still drying out Windsor Castle.” In 1997 Philip addressed German Chancellor Helmut Kohl as “Reichskanzler,” which was Adolf Hitler’s title. At least he seems to appreciate his privileged existence. When asked in 1992 how he felt about his life, the prince replied, “I’d much rather have stayed in the Navy, frankly.”
