The Prince and Princess of Wales, Prince William and Kate Middleton, have broken with royal convention by sharing a tender photograph of William chastely kissing Kate on the cheek to mark Valentine’s Day. The British royal family, traditionally known for their formality and reserved public image, have never previously acknowledged the “Hallmark Holiday” on social media. The image is taken from a video Kate released when she announced that she had recovered from cancer. The decision to share such an intimate moment will be seen as yet another modernizing tonal shift in how the royal couple engages with and relates to their audience, with the couple keen to usher in a more open and emotionally expressive era. The couple have been keen to emphasize their focus on the importance of family and personal relationships in the wake of Kate’s recent health struggles.
