The Pentagon on Wednesday will release the findings of an investigation that reportedly will largely exonerate military officials at U.S. Central Command of charges they manipulated intelligence reports to give a better picture of the battle against ISIS. According to people familiar with the inspector general’s report, the investigation found no evidence to support military analysts’ claims that intelligence was deliberately skewed to more positive views. Dozens of analysts complained in 2015 that senior officials had edited portions of their reports to help them come off more optimistic regarding military progress. The complaints sparked a congressional investigation into whether intelligence was purposely distorted by Obama administration officials; that task force found that Centcom officials had altered some intel reports, but not at the direction of senior Obama officials.
