Chicago’s embattled top prosecutor Anita Alvarez lost to Kim Foxx in the Illinois Democratic primary Tuesday night in what many saw as a victory for the Black Lives Matter movement. The Cook County state’s attorney came under fire this past year for her handling of the Laquan McDonald case, in which she waited 13 months before charging a Chicago police officer who shot the unarmed teen 16 times. “I’ve been criticized that I wasn’t a very good politician. And that’s probably why I stand here before you tonight,” Alvarez said. “But I am very damn proud of the fact that I am a good prosecutor.” Foxx, a lawyer who argued Alvarez mishandled the case, will face off against Republican Christopher E.K. Pfannkuche in November’s general election.
