Protests Bring Bangkok to Standstill

Crowd defies threats of arrest.

Thai demonstrators have brought their capital Bangkok to a standstill as they demand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva dissolve parliament and hold elections early. Two big shopping malls were forced to close, roads in the center of the city were clogged, and traffic was blocked. Though the red-shirted protesters—who for the most part support the exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra—remain defiant, the mood is “good-natured and peaceful,” the BBC reports, with no signs of security forces. Talks have failed twice; the protesters say holding a vote one year early is not soon enough.
