In a first-person essay published Saturday on the Dallas Morning News’ website, a nurse who was quarantined after returning from working in West Africa expresses anger and frustration at how she was treated upon landing at Newark Liberty International Airport. Kaci Hickox writes her temperature read normally upon landing, but four hours later, after being held in a room “with no explanation,” her fever registered 101 degrees on a forehead scanner operated by a “smug”-looking officer. She attributes the above-normal reading to being flush with anxiety over being detained without explanation. She says that when her temperature was taken again at University Hospital in Newark, it was back to a normal 98.6 degrees. Though a preliminary test for Ebola came back negative for Hickox, she is to remain under a 21-day quarantine.
