The former police chief of a Florida city has been sentenced to three years in prison for his role in a conspiracy to frame black people for burglaries and vehicle break-ins that they didn’t commit. Ex-Biscayne Park Chief Raimundo Atesiano had faced a maximum of 10 years, but a federal judge in Miami imposed a more lenient sentence Tuesday. His lawyer attempted to justify Atesiano’s actions by saying the victims of the conspiracy were not randomly selected but were known to police as having criminal pasts. Three other former officers also pleaded guilty in the case—two were sentenced to a year each in prison, the third got two years behind bars.
