A talking lizard grabbed the best box-office opening of 2011 this weekend, with Johnny Depp’s animated Western Rango bringing in $38 million. The film, helmed by Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski, cost a hefty $135 million to produce—a sum that may be difficult to recoup without the inflated 3-D prices most other animated movies enjoy. Emily Blunt and Matt Damon’s The Adjustment Bureau bowed in second with $21 million. That’s Damon’s best opening since 2007; it also gives Blunt two films in the top five, as Gnomeo & Juliet holds on to fifth place with $7 million.
