The U.S. is leaving the fate of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset al-Megrahi in the hands of Libya’s rebel leaders, the State Department confirmed Monday. CNN found Megrahi “near death” at his family’s palatial villa in Tripoli on Sunday, hooked up to oxygen and an intravenous drip. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told CNN reporters on Monday that the department did not support his release from a Scottish prison in 2009, but believed the rebels’ National Transitional Council should decide whether he should go back to prison as soon as the rebels “get their feet under themselves as a governing authority.”
