On Friday afternoon, Rep. Renee Ellmers emphatically denounced rumors that an affair with her was the reason Rep. Kevin McCarthy withdrew his candidacy for Speaker of the House. Ellmers said she has been "targeted completely false accusations." She added: "I will be praying for those who find it acceptable to bear false witness," she added in a statement. Hours later, the Associated Press reported that Ellmers told fellow lawmakers, in a closed-door meeting, that the rumors of her affair are "batshit crazy."
