Democratic U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson on Thursday night called out White House Chief of Staff John Kelly for allegedly getting the facts wrong in his defense of President Trump’s condolence call to a soldier’s grieving widow. Kelly lashed out at Wilson earlier Thursday after the congresswoman slammed Trump for telling the widow her husband “knew what he signed up for.” Kelly accused Wilson of hypocrisy, recounting a story about himself and the congresswoman attending a 2015 ceremony to dedicate a new FBI building named after two slain agents. Kelly said Wilson took advantage of the somber ceremony to boast “about how she was instrumental in getting the funding for that building.” Wilson rebuked Kelly’s claims, however, saying late Thursday that she could not have made any such statements because the funding was approved before she was even in Congress at the time. “He shouldn’t be able to just say that, that is terrible. This has become totally personal,” she told the Miami Herald. Nonetheless, hours later, Trump tweeted: “The Fake News is going crazy with wacky Congresswoman Wilson (D), who was SECRETLY on a very personal call, and gave a total lie on content!”
