Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), the powerful chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, announced Wednesday that he would not seek re-election. “I will not be filing for re-election to Congress nor seeking any other political or elected office; instead I will be returning to the justice system,” he said in a statement. Gowdy, who oversaw the House GOP inquiries into the Benghazi attacks, Hillary Clinton’s private email server, and the allegations of collusion with Russia during the 2016 election, is the ninth Republican committee chairman in the House to call it quits.
