The East Baton Rouge Parish's mayor's office told reporters that two police officers were killed in a shooting in the city, which has seen frequent protests in the wake of Alton Sterling's death by police officers earlier this month. A manhunt was still underway for the shooter, or shooters. "They say stay home. Stay off the streets," wrote Advocate reporter Rebekah Allen. William Daniel, the city-parish's chief administrative officer, reportedly confirmed the deaths.
CNN reported a source familiar with the investigation said officers responded to a call of a suspicious man with an assault rifle near a B-Quik convenience store. The suspect shot 7 officers and killed at least 2, according to CNN's source.
The shooting comes several days after local law enforcement made four arrests in an alleged plot to kill police after a pawn shop was robbed of firearms.
The mayor-president of East Baton Rouge Parish, Kip Holden, told CNN that at least three police officers were feared dead. "There is still an active scene. They are investigating. Right now we are trying to get our arms around everything. It's just been one thing after another," Holden said.
Baton Rouge Police spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola confirmed the shooting had injured city officers, as well as East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's deputies.
“The scene seems to be contained right now,” Coppola told WAFB-TV at about 11 a.m. EST. “We’re asking everyone to stay out of the area.” He added, "I do not have the extent of the injuries."
