On Friday, Syrian State TV reported that the leader of the al Qaeda-linked group al Nusra Front, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, has been "killed" in the western province of Latakia. Details are still scarce but, if confirmed, the death of the rebel leader would be a major victory for the Syrian government. The al Nusra Front, which has risen as one of the most powerful rebel groups since its start in January 2012, has claimed responsibility for multiple attacks against government targets and has been designated by the U.S. as a terrorist organization.
