The Department of Health and Human Services has 11,785 minors in its care, according to an HHS official cited Monday in a tweet from NBC News. The new total comes amidst bipartisan concern over the quality of HHS’ detention centers, which former first lady Barbara Bush compared to Japanese internment facilities, and outrage at the Administration’s policy of separating minors from their families.
