Report Highlights Gun Loophole Problems

DISTURBING

Estimates 25,000 illegal purchases from one website.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the bipartisan coalition created by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, has released a report detailing how criminals use the private-sale loophole to get around background checks. The report notes that one in 30 people buying guns online from Armslist, a popular firearms retailer, have criminal records that should prohibit them from purchasing weapons. It estimates that more than 25,000 guns a year are sold through Armslist to people who shouldn’t have them. Bloomberg said this investigation just “scratched the surface,” and that Congress should pass a law requiring background checks for all gun purchases.
