U.S. officials reportedly believe that Russian agents planted a fake news story in Qatar’s state media agency that contributed to the diplomatic crisis in the Gulf region. According to CNN, FBI officials were dispatched to the capital city of Doha to figure out what exactly happened that led Russia to try to create another crisis. “Whatever has been thrown as an accusation is all based on misinformation and we think that the entire crisis is being based on misinformation,” Qatar’s foreign minister told CNN. “Because it was started based on fabricated news, being wedged and being inserted in our national news agency which was hacked and proved by the FBI.” Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Yemen, cut off ties with Qatar over allegations that it funds terrorism.
