Report: Trump Called for Campaign to Discredit Potential FBI Witnesses

After learning from his lawyer that senior officials could testify in Mueller’s probe.

President Trump called for a campaign to discredit several senior FBI officials who could become witnesses in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, Foreign Policy reported Friday. After ex-FBI chief James Comey testified last year that he spoke with other senior bureau officials about Trump’s alleged efforts to undermine his own Russia investigation, the president told White Hosue aides that he and supporters had to “fight back harder,” one of those officials told Foreign Policy. “Since [Trump’s lawyer John] Dowd gave him that information [of potential witnesses], Trump—as well as his aides, surrogates, and some Republican members of Congress—has engaged in an unprecedented campaign to discredit specific senior bureau officials and the FBI as an institution,” the outlet noted.
