Republicans Admit They Are Terrified of an Obama ‘Takeover’

Fears of an Obama-induced blue wave are beginning to overwhelm Republicans.

Republicans are freaking out about the possibility of a Barack Obama “takeover” in the midterms.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has blasted out an email to its supporters with the subject line “Obama plots Senate takeover,” warning conservatives to “brace” themselves for what is to come.

The message, obtained by the progressive outlet Crooks&Liars, went on to make a damning admission about the state of the Republican Party ahead of what is expected to be a GOP bloodbath on Election Day.

“It was long believed there was no possible chance Democrats could flip FOUR SEATS in order to seize the President’s Senate Majority,” the NRSC wrote. “But alas, here we are in the final stretch of the election with Obama betting EVERYTHING on flipping the Senate.”

The committee singled out an NBC News report with the headline, “Obama boosts Senate Democrats with October fundraiser.” The fundraiser, held Wednesday, was for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

The panicked email went on to say that Obama is looking to deliver “a knockout punch” to President Donald Trump, warning that he was even “meeting with his handpicked Democratic Speaker of the House” in September.

“Republicans are DOWN BY 8% in midterm polling,” the email continued, without citing a specific survey. “Without your support, we will LOSE BIG!”

The Cook Political Report lists seven Senate races as toss-ups: Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas. Beyond the toss-ups, Democrats are now outright favored in North Carolina and Georgia, two states Trump carried in 2024, and in New Hampshire, which was once viewed as a toss-up.

Obama has ramped up his political campaigning in recent weeks. Most recently, he threw his support behind Troy Jackson in the Maine Senate race, giving the Democratic nominee a boost as he hopes to oust longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins—a seat Republicans desperately need to hold.

The former president has also ramped up mentoring candidates in key races elsewhere, including traveling to stump for Democratic Senate hopefuls James Talarico in Texas and Josh Turek in Iowa. Obama’s team says he has also recorded ads for two dozen other candidates across the country that are expected to air this month.

One of those ads—supporting Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff, the 39-year-old Democratic incumbent sometimes referred to as the party’s “New Obama”—debuted Thursday.

“By voting for Jon Ossoff, we have the chance to protect voting rights, stand up for Civil Rights, and help build an economy that works for everyone,” Obama says in a 60-second radio spot.

Ossoff’s team says it plans to release a 30-second video version on other platforms in the coming days. Ossoff flipped the Georgia seat blue in 2021 and is now viewed as a top 2028 presidential contender for Democrats. His oratory skills, youthful energy, and rapid rise in the Senate have been likened to Obama’s in the buildup of his 2008 presidential victory.
