Senate Republicans stopped a bill Saturday that would have given citizenship to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants in the U.S. The Dream Act would grant instant citizenship to illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and are enrolling in college or the military. The bill, which was cleared by the House last week, needed 60 votes in order to go into effect, but it was five votes shy. Critics and many Republicans claim that the bill would encourage more illegal immigrants to come to the U.S., while immigrant advocates say the Dream Act could give citizenship to the most achieving of illegal immigrants.
