A retired state trooper was fatally shot after he killed two people in an attempted robbery at a central Pennsylvania Turnpike toll plaza Sunday. Clarence Briggs, 55, was a 26-year veteran police officer who retired four years ago. He shot and killed toll-booth worker Danny Crouse, 55, and Ron Heist, a 72-year-old security guard, at the Fort Littleton toll booth, located about 65 miles west of Harrisburg. State troopers shot and killed Briggs as he was transferring money from a stolen fare-collection vehicle into a parked car, officials said.
