The second-highest number of Americans ever commuted to work by public transit this past year. With passengers taking 10.52 million trips by trains, buses, and commuter rail, ridership gained 1.49 percent. The increase in ridership is likely because of more people returning to jobs, and came despite superstorm Sandy shutting down much of the East Coast.
