Everyone has heard the Florida Man meme, and many of you likely follow @floridaman on Twitter. To say that our southernmost state is a hotbed of eyebrow-raising “WTF?” headlines is an understatement. But why? What makes the sunbaked mass of coral, swamp, palm trees, and alligators prone to more head-shaking moments than the rest of the country?

In this first installment of our new Road Beast travel series, we visit some of the Florida’s weirdest landmarks. From a machine gun theme park at the gates of Disney World and the Skunk Ape World Headquarters in the heart of the Everglades to an oversexed old folks’ home and the Florida Gun Supply—the gun shop that endorsed George Zimmerman for president and has famously refused to serve members of the Muslim faith—we leave no Florideal stone unturned.
