Marilynne Robinson scooped up this year’s Orange prize for the best novel written by a woman in a unanimous decision by the prize’s judging board. Robinson’s mediation on family relationships, Home, was the clear favorite of the six shortlisted books. Robinson, who is considered to be among the greatest living writers, teaches creative writing in Iowa City, and Home is only her third novel. She waited almost 25 years after her critically acclaimed debut Housekeeping to write another novel. A.S. Byatt and others have refused to be considered for the Orange award since it only considers women. Past winners have included Carol Shields and Zadie Smith.
