Guess the U.S. military won’t be falling for that trick again: Rolling Stone reporter Michael Hastings has been denied permission to embed with troops in Afghanistan, according to the Pentagon. Hastings wrote the article in which Gen. Stanley McChrystal said the inflammatory things about U.S. officials and fights over war strategy that got him fired. The Pentagon is investigating the circumstances around Hastings’ reporting on that article, and the inspector general is interviewing past and present McChrystal aides. The independent investigator is looking into whether officers were insubordinate and where responsibility lies for some interviews in the article. Reporters are rarely denied requests to embed, the Pentagon admitted, but insisted “there is no right” to do so and that command in Afghanistan would not be able to trust Hastings.
