It was the fallout that had the entire media world talking: Jim Romenesko, the founder of an obsessively-read blog about the news business, suddenly out of a job at the Poynter Institute, accused by his employer of failure to properly credit his sources. Now, Romenesko reveals what happened behind the scenes: Poynter editors were actually responsible for the change in style led to what journalism watchdogs call “over-aggregation”, and then tried to pre-empt a Columbia Journalism Review ethics story by pubicly blaming the problem on Romenesko. “I think Poynter’s going to fire me,” he told a friend, “and try to ruin my reputation so none of their advertisers will go with me on the new site.”
