Russia on Wednesday granted consular access to accused American spy Paul Whelan, according to reports. The 48-year-old from Michigan was arrested five days earlier, and it’s still unclear what the corporate security director stands accused of doing. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said he was carrying out an act of espionage at the time he was detained. Whelan’s family contends that he was in Russia to attend a wedding. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, speaking from Brazil, has said the U.S. intends to learn more about the charges and will demand his immediate return “if the detention is not appropriate.”
