With the shadow of the European debt crisis looming large, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and EU President Herman Van Rompuy met on Monday in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don for an ambitious summit. The leaders intend to skim over the toughest geopolitical issues at their 25th summit, instead focusing on loosening up immigration and abolishing visa requirements. Russia also hopes to sway European leaders to invest in the country’s effort to modernize their economy. Meanwhile, Europe struggles with the Greek debt crisis and a drop in euro value while negotiating energy policy with Russia, its largest supplier.
