After two female suicide bombers killed 39 people on the Moscow subway on Monday, the hunt is on for a 21-strong “Black Widow” cell. “Black Widows” are what Russians call female Chechen suicide bombers, and this particular cell is believed to be connected to Said Buryatsky, the Islamist ideologue who was killed by Russian forces (though it’s unclear whether these women are avenging his death or whether he planned this campaign with them before he was killed). Russia’s Federal Security Service says it believes the cell originally had 30 trainees, but nine have already killed themselves. The rest are at large.
