One of Russia’s highest-ranking officials insisted Friday that the suspected chemical attack in Syria last week, which is believed to have killed over 70 people and affected 500 others, was a “fabrication” carried out by an unspecified foreign intelligence agency. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claims Russian experts inspected the site of the alleged attack in Douma, east of Damascus, and found no trace of chemical weapons. He claimed the Kremlin has “irrefutable information that it was another fabrication” and added that “intelligence agencies of a state that is now striving to spearhead a Russo-phobic campaign were involved in that fabrication.” The suspected chemical attack has caused international outrage and has led to the U.S., the U.K., and France threatening airstrikes on Syrian military sites.
