Russia has suspended its participation in a nuclear-weapons treaty that bans using short and medium-range missiles. The announcement by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday comes just one day after the Trump administration said the U.S. would withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty. Trump claimed that Russia had violated the 1987 accord by developing a new missile banned under the treaty. While Russia had denied violating the treaty, Putin has now said the country would begin developing new weapons, including a land-based cruise missile. “Our American partners announced that they are suspending their participation in the treaty, and we are suspending it too,” Putin said, adding Russia wouldn’t deploy these missiles unless the U.S. did so first.
