A reporter for a major Russian paper was beaten into a coma Saturday by two men who ambushed him in his Moscow apartment. The attackers were waiting for Oleg Kashin, 30, when he returned to his apartment after midnight and broke his upper and lower jaw and both his legs. Kashin also suffered a concussion, and after an operation, doctors put him in an artificial coma. His editor at the Kommersant newspaper said the fact that the attackers didn’t rob Kashin and made a point of breaking his fingers made it appear to be retaliation for his reporting, which was investigating “informal organizations.” If Kashin’s attack was retaliation, it’s the latest in a string of violent crimes against journalists in Russia, most of which have gone unsolved.
