San Antonio Bans LGBT Discrimination

Ordinance now protects sexual orientation and gender identity.

As of this week, it is not legal to discriminate against someone based on their sexual orientation or gender identity in San Antonio. The city council voted, Thursday, to add those protections to its non-discrimination ordinance, joining the likes of Houston, Dallas, Austin and other Texas cities that have done the same. "This ordinance fundamentally is about ensuring whether white or black, Christian or Jew, whether straight or gay, San Antonio belongs to you," said Mayor Julian Castro of the decision that was debated by more than 2,000 citizens, both opponents and supporters, and was backed by many facets of the local government as well as businesses like the San Antonio Spurs.
