Hillary Clinton narrowly edged out Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders in fundraising this past quarter, raising more than $28 million, compared with the more than $24 million the Vermont senator received, according to campaign totals released Wednesday. Sanders has received 1.4 million donations from about 650,000 different donors—a figure that puts Sanders across the threshold of 1 million contributions earlier than Barack Obama in both his presidential campaigns. Clinton raised $47.5 million in the previous quarter, compared with Sanders’ $15.2 million. Sanders has spent considerably less on his campaign than Clinton, eschewing larger contributions by focusing on raising smaller amounts of money online and through a smaller donor base. Other unexpected campaign fundraising came from Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson, who raised $20 million since July, according to a campaign spokeswoman. The retired neurosurgeon, who launched his bid in May, has raised more than $30 million in total.
