Rick Santorum will get Secret Service protection beginning Tuesday, according to an administration official. He will be the second current Republican candidate to receive protection from the Secret Service, following Mitt Romney, who has been covered since Feb. 1. Herman Cain, who exited the race back in December, was the first to receive protection in November. Newt Gingrich reportedly would like a Secret Service detail and is waiting to see if his request from last week will be approved. While Secret Service protection is provided to each party’s nominee, it can be approved earlier by the Department of Homeland Security if a candidate meets a certain standard of public visibility.
