French president Nicolas Sarkozy used his new year's speech to protest the wearing of the full Islamic veil in France, saying that he would like parliament to pass an "unambiguous" resolution against it and describing the clothing as "not welcome" in France. "It runs contrary to our values and contrary to the idea we have of a woman's dignity," Sarkozy said, although he softened his rhetoric by urging French citizens to avoid "stigmatizing" any segment of society. According to The Guardian, only 2,000 women in France wear the full veil.
