Sawfish Reproduce with Virgin Births

DIVINE INTERVENTION

First time found in vertebrates in the wild.

Virgin birth isn’t just for biblical tales. Scientists at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission found that 3 percent of pregnant female sawfish had no recent contact with males. Reproduction without input from a male has been discovered before, in sharks, snakes, and fish, but not in vertebrates in the wild. The fish species has been driven close to extinction, and the female-only reproduction may help it survive.
