In the aftermath of the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that devastated the city of Jiegu, China, many survivors spent the night outside in freezing or near-freezing temperatures, desperately searching the rubble to uncover more survivors. According to Chinese media, the quake claimed the lives of 580 people and injured more than 10,000. Jiegu residents are still in shock. Among the many dead or missing are students from a boarding school at which all the buildings had toppled. In less than three hours, the U.S. Geological Survey logged six quakes in the region, all but one with a magnitude of 5.0 or higher. The region is home to about 100,000 people, largely farmers and herders. Downed power lines and blocked roads leading to the local airport have hampered rescue operations.
