Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announced on Tuesday that he would resign effective Wednesday amid mounting allegations of sexual abuse. “While the allegations against me are not true, it is important that my personal issues do not affect the ability of our city government to conduct the people’s business,” Murray said in a statement. Earlier Tuesday, Murray’s younger cousin Joseph Dyer accused Murray of molesting him in the 1970s. According to the Seattle Times, Murray “forced [Dyer] into sex for about a year while the two shared a bedroom in Dyer’s mother’s home.” Murray on Tuesday denied the allegations, saying, “there’s been numerous fights between our two families for many years, and much ugliness. I guess they see me down and out, and they want to finish me off.”
