Merriam-Webster announced its annual new additions Monday, and thanks to Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, and President Obama, the (in)famous “selfie” has made the list. Other social media-focused terms, like “hashtag,” “catfish” (as a verb), “tweep,” and “crowdfunding” were declared part of the official lexicon, as well. Surprisingly enough, popular foods like “pho” and “poutine” were not already part of Merriam-Webster’s dictionary prior to the addition, nor was the ever-controversial “fracking.” In a fitting move for a list of new words that includes so many tech and social media-related terms, people now have the option to vote online to determine whether “duckface” or “adorkable” will be added.
