Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND) announced he will not seek reelection Tuesday. Currently rated "solid Democrat," Dorgan's seat will now be hotly contested, especially if North Dakota's Republican Gov. John Hoeven decides to throw his hat in the ring. The senator said that after consulting with his family over the holidays, he decided to leave behind his 30-year career in Congress to pursue "other interests," including teaching, writing, and working on "energy policy in the private sector." Democrats are nervous about a large number of congressional veterans retiring this year, though Republicans have long odds of taking back the House.
