Judge Neil M. Gorsuch on Friday was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to become the 113th justice ever to serve on the Supreme Court, replacing Antonin Scalia, who died in February of last year. The Senate confirmation of the 49-year-old marks the symbolic end to a political storm that has lasted for more than a year, and is considered a conservative victory, since he adheres to many of the same positions as Scalia and may serve on the court for more than three decades. Senate Republicans last year refused to even consider the last nominee put forward by President Obama: Judge Merrick B. Garland. According to reports, the final tally was largely along party lines, with 54-45 in favor of his confirmation.
