One year after being nominated by President Obama, the Senate confirmed Vivek Murthy as America's next surgeon general. The delay was due to NRA lobbying against 37-year-old Murthy, who is a vocal critic of the gun-rights group. Obama issued a statement about the confirmation, saying it "makes us better positioned to save lives around the world and protect the American people here at home." Murthy is the first Indian-American and the youngest person to serve in this position.
