There goes dysfunctional Washington again. Hours after Republican House Speaker John Boehner pushed through his debt-ceiling fix—which would slash $900 billion over 10 years and raise the debt ceiling in two installments, among other measures—the Democrat-controlled Senate quickly squashed it by a 59-41 vote. Six Senate Republicans voted against the plan, which passed with exclusively Republican votes in the House. Harry Reid, who leads the Senate, then presented his own plan, a $2.4-trillion proposal that'd raise the debt ceiling by that amount through 2013. Next up: another round of talks, and perhaps a compromise by Obama’s new deadline of Tuesday.
