Serbia Beats Germany, 1-0

Though Germany was so convincing and emphatic in its first game of the World Cup, it found none of that attacking verve Friday morning as Serbia pulled off a major upset, winning 1-0. Germany, which had not lost a first-round game since 1986, was harshly punished when striker Miroslav Klose was sent off in the 37th minute for the tamest of fouls. Seconds later, things got worse for Germany—Milan Jovanovic put Serbia ahead from close range. In the second half, Germany piled on the pressure and even won a penalty. But the Serbian goalkeeper denied Lukas Podolski in the 60th minute and his side held on for the victory.
