Seth Meyers has a message for die-hard Bernie Sanders supporters so urgent he could not wait until his usual 12:35 a.m. airtime tonight to deliver it.
In a clip from tonight’s taped episode of Late Night, posted to Meyers’ personal Twitter account and YouTube hours before showtime, the host introduced a brand new segment called “Hey!” directed squarely at the “hardcore Bernie or Bust movement,” which spent Day One of the Democratic National Convention loudly booing anytime they heard Hillary Clinton’s name.
“Hey! What’s going on?” Meyers asked. “I tuned in last night and there was more white booing than the Casper movie. Look, I know you’re ‘Bernie or Bust’ but the results are in and ‘Bust’ won. We don’t have time for this.”
Noting that Donald Trump is leading Clinton in some general election polls, Meyers said, “The house is on fire. Stop crying because we’re not putting it out with your hose.” As the country is poised to elect a “racist demagogue,” something that “never ends well,” he added, “I don’t know which class you ditched to go to those Bernie rallies, but I have a feeling it was history.”
Meyers even admitted that Sanders probably “hates” Clinton personally, but unlike his supporters he’s “adult enough to pretend he doesn’t.” He then added, “We’ve all experienced disappointment. I couldn’t get Rihanna to go out with me, but I don’t stand in the kitchen and boo my wife.”
“Bernie did a great job. You did a great job,” he told Sanders fans. “Your passion changed the Democratic Party and that is no small thing. You should be proud of yourselves for his campaign. But also, you have to be quiet now!”
If the “Bernie or Bust” folks won’t listen to Bernie Sanders, they aren’t going to heed Seth Meyers’ call. But it was worth a shot.
