Seventy Dead in Iran Plane Crash

ACCIDENT

Death toll expected to rise.

Hazy weather conditions are hampering a rescue mission in northwestern Iran, where a Boeing 727 passenger plane crashed and killed at least 70 people and injured at least 35. The head of the Iranian Red Crescent, Mahmoud Mozafar, told Reuters, “The plane was smashed into pieces but did not explode.” At the time, 106 people were on board; 50 people have been saved so far, one official said, but heavy snow and fog are dragging down the rescue efforts. “The death toll is expected to rise,” according to another official.
