As controversy builds around Arizona's new tough immigration law, state and federal law enforcement officials have captured 17 suspected illegal immigrants, including one who allegedly shot a sheriff's deputy about 50 miles south of Phoenix as they attempted to smuggle marijuana. The policeman, Louie Puroll, 53, was patrolling in the desert when at least one suspect opened fire, wounding Puroll in the abdomen. He was found after an hourlong search. Helicopters were fired on as they searched for the suspects, and the hunt lasted into the wee hours Saturday morning.
