A passenger ship carrying more than 450 people sank in the Yangtze River on Monday night, leaving few survivors. Only 18 have been rescued so far, including the ship’s captain and head engineer—who were subsequently detained by police. According to the crew, the ship was hit by something that looked like a tornado. Passengers aboard the vessel, which was going from Nanjing to Chongqing, were largely older, with many of them aged between 50 and 80. Heavy storms and wind may have contributed to the sinking, according to some reports.
