Saturday Night Live alum Sasheer Zamata has come out as a “late-in-life lesbian” as she gears up for a witchy role in the WandaVision spinoff, Disney+’s Agatha All Along. “I’m out in my life and I do keep my personal life kind of private, but I also don’t necessarily want my identity to be private,” said Zamata in a Sept. 9 profile published by Them. “No one asks straight people about their journey of discovery,” the 38-year-old comedian and actress added about coming out, which she says was prompted when she stopped taking birth control. “It really did kind of change everything. I cut all my hair off. And I was always attracted to women, but I think [that] really boosted it.” On screen, Zamata has frequently played queer. “I played a lesbian on Home Economics. I played a lesbian on Woke. I played a lesbian on Tuca & Bertie. A lesbian on The Last O.G. I kept getting these roles. And this is before I myself was figuring out my identity,” she explained. Although her role as potions expert Jennifer Kale in the upcoming Agatha isn’t explicitly queer, she still found a way to relate. “It’s nice to be able to portray a character who has been an outcast for a lot of her life,” Zamata said. “And to be in a show that’s exploring so many cool female themes and queer themes, it feels very appropriate.”
